Sven Rayen is a Belgian tattoo artist based in Antwerp and an expert and early pioneer in Micro Realism tattooing. Working professionally as a tattoo artist since 2009, he began experimenting with Single Needle techniques around 2010, at a time when this highly detailed approach to tattooing was still relatively uncommon in Europe.
His background in illustration, combined with Black and Grey tattooing, Single Needle techniques and precise shading, gradually developed into a distinctive approach to small-scale realism. Today, this type of work is widely referred to as Micro Realism.
At Studio Palermo in Antwerp, Sven creates custom Micro Realism tattoos with a strong emphasis on detail, contrast, readability and longevity.

Micro Realism is a form of tattooing in which realistic imagery is translated into a relatively small format. Portraits, animals, objects, artworks, architecture and other complex subjects can be reduced to a scale that requires considerable technical precision.
The objective, however, is not simply to reproduce as much photographic detail as possible.
A tattoo exists in skin, not on paper or on a screen. Lines soften, tonal values change and very subtle details can evolve as the tattoo ages. For Sven, successful Micro Realism therefore begins with deciding what to preserve, what to simplify and where contrast is necessary.
The smallest possible tattoo is not necessarily the best tattoo. Scale should always serve the image.
An early approach to Micro Realism
Sven began tattooing professionally in Antwerp in 2009. Around 2010, he started experimenting extensively with Single Needle tattooing and increasingly refined Black and Grey techniques.
At the time, Fine Line and Single Needle tattooing had not yet achieved the international popularity they have today. The term Micro Realismitself was not yet commonly used to describe the growing practice of creating highly detailed realistic tattoos at a small scale.
These early experiments became the foundation of Sven's Micro Realism work.
Rather than approaching Micro Realism as a trend or a fixed visual style, he developed it through years of practical tattooing, drawing and observation of how fine tattoos change once healed.
This makes Sven Rayen one of the early practitioners and pioneers of contemporary Micro Realism tattooing in Belgium and Europe.
Micro Realism and Single Needle
Micro Realism and Single Needle tattooing are closely related, but they are not synonymous.
Single Needledescribes a tattooing technique: working with an extremely fine needle configuration to produce delicate lines, subtle textures and precise details.
Micro Realismdescribes the visual objective: creating a convincing realistic image within a relatively small tattoo.
A Micro Realism tattoo can involve Single Needle work, but may also require different needle configurations to create sufficient blacks, gradients, textures and contrast.
For Sven, technique is always subordinate to the final tattoo. The choice of needle, line weight and shading method depends on what the image requires and how it is expected to heal.
Designed to remain readable
One of the central principles of Sven's tattoo practice is readability.
A freshly made tattoo can contain extremely subtle details that look impressive in a photograph. But a tattoo should not be designed exclusively for the moment it is photographed.
Skin changes. Tattoos settle and age.
For this reason, Sven's Micro Realism work uses contrast, negative space and carefully selected details to maintain a clear visual structure. Some information may deliberately be removed or simplified if retaining it would compromise the tattoo over time.
The aim is not maximum detail.
The aim is the right detail.
Custom Micro Realism tattoos
Every Micro Realism tattoo by Sven Rayen is custom designed for the individual client.
Reference material can provide the starting point, but the final design is adapted specifically for tattooing. Composition, dimensions, placement, contrast and the relationship between detail and open space are considered before the tattoo is made.
Subjects can range from portraits and animals to artworks, sculptures, architecture, historical imagery, personal objects and unusual visual references.
Author of Micro Tattoos
Sven Rayen's involvement with Micro and Fine Line tattooing extends beyond his own tattoo practice.
Together with designer and Studio Palermo co-founder Ti Racovita, he is the author of Micro Tattoos: The World's Top Fineline Tattoo Artists, published internationally by Lannoo in 2023.
The book documents and curates the work of leading contemporary tattoo artists working within Micro tattooing and Fine Line, placing Sven's own practice within a broader international development of the discipline.
Sven and Ti subsequently authored Fine Line Tattoos in 2024 and Happy Tattoos in 2025, also published by Lannoo.
